Robotic process automation (RPA) is an upcoming variety of business process automation technology based on software robots (bots) or artificial intelligence (AI) employees.

 In a traditional automation system a software developer generates a list of actions in order to automate particular tasks and interface to the back-end system application programming interfaces (APIs) or particularly used scripting language, but in RPA a set of action lists are generated where  the user performs that task in the application's graphical user interface (GUI), and then automation is performed by repeating the tasks directly in the GUI, which reduces the barrier to utilize automation in products that might not or else feature APIs for this principle.

 It uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning technologies in order to handle processes or tasks on the repetitive way and peak workload quickly, tirelessly, and accurately which may include processing a transaction and query handling. It uses software that mimics a list of actions to automate a task using internal application programming interfaces (APIs) or any scripting language. It is neither a physical nor a mechanical robot. It is a technological imitation of a human worker with the goal of automating structured tasks in a fast and cost-efficient manner.

It is computer software programmed to execute repetitive labor-intensive tasks? In the early 2000s, "robotic process automation" had been developing. The name was coined by Arthur Samuel in the year 1959. It is mainly evolved from the key technologies such as screen scraping, workflow automation and artificial intelligence in which screen scraping software made big leaps for the creation of RPA software. In the ’90s workflow automation tools were released and AI emerged which paved a way to Robotic Process Automation. With RPA technology, software that has the ability to adapt, self-learn and self-correct would deal with the exception and interact with the payroll system without the assistance of humans.
